Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion investment to build a Forward Deployed Engineering organization, embedding expert teams directly inside customer companies to co-develop and ship agentic AI systems.
The FDE model is built so customers don't just get a deployed system when the engagement ends. They leave with knowledge graphs, runbooks, architectural documentation, and internal engineers who can operate independently.
Early customers include the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, the NFL, and Southwest Airlines. Traditional consultancies that sell AI strategy are now competing against an organization that ships production code.

At an AI safety conference in Beijing this month, MIT computer scientist Stephen Casper and researchers from Chinese institutions called jointly for global cooperation on AI risk, warning the industry cannot afford what Casper called a "Chernobyl moment." The fear isn't only the catastrophe itself.
